John has worked for NELSON | SMITH, LLP since 2006. John began practicing immigration law in 2010. Since then, John has worked with clients on family and business immigration matters including family based petitions, consular processing, adjustment of status applications, fiancée visas, Naturalizations, DACA, VAWA, U-Visas as well as business visas. John is also excited to focus on post-DOMA immigration advocacy for same sex couples.

John received his J.D. from Willamette University College of Law, where he completed Bucerius Law School’s (Hochschule Fur Rechtswissenschaft) semester exchange program in International and Comparative Business Law, in Hamburg, Germany. Prior to attending law school, John lived and worked in Sydney, Australia where he completed an M.A. in International Relations from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). At UNSW, John focused on international politics and economics. John received his B.A. in History from Gonzaga University. While at Gonzaga, John studied for two semesters in Florence, Italy where he travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East.

John has been a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Northwest Regional Conference planning committee in 2011, 2012, and 2013, helping to coordinate and conduct the annual AILA Regional Conferences in Seattle and Portland. Additionally, John was also AILA Oregon’s Law Student Liaison in 2011 and 2012.

During law school, John participated in a summer externship program with Mercy Corps in Portland, Oregon where he assisted in-house counsel with a number of global legal issues confronting the international non-profit organization.

Prior to and during law school, John worked for NELSON | SMITH, LLP as a law clerk and legal assistant. He has also worked and volunteered at Immigration Counseling Service in Portland, Oregon.

John is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, and is a member of the Oregon Bar Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).
